A perfect blend of urban living, historical architecture, and natural beauty, the Franklin Park neighborhood is a residential oasis in the heart of downtown Columbus, Ohio.
The Franklin Park neighborhood encompasses the area south of Broad Street from Wilson Avenue east to Alum Creek and north of Main Street. Originally developed between 1890 and 1930, Columbus’ wealthy families built both large mansions and smaller well-appointed homes for their children and entourage. At that time, just east of downtown was a transition between the hustle of the city and the bucolic landscape beyond Alum Creek.
Homes in the area include late Victorian mansions, English Cottages, Craftsman bungalows and Colonial Revival. Sprinkled among single family dwellings are a potpourri of row houses and an eight story Art Deco apartment building.
Eighty-eight acre Franklin Park, a true Columbus jewel, sits at the heart of our neighborhood. Like the neighborhood surrounding it, the park boasts a rich history. It served as home to both the Franklin County Fair and Ohio State Fair for many years in the 19th Century. William Techumseh Sherman’s gave his famous “War is Hell” speech there in 1880. More recently, it hosted AmeriFlora ’92, the first international Floral and Garden exhibition in the United States. The Park’s centerpiece is the Victorian styled Franklin Park Conservatory which holds the Chihuly Collection of botanically inspired glass art.
Today’s Franklin Park neighbors enjoy strolling through the many neighborhood parks, gardening both at home and in the many nearby community gardens, easygoing neighborhood social life, like Book Club and Thursday night Cocktails at the Conservatory, and close proximity to fine dining and nightlife hubs German Village and the Short North.
